Grandson of the famous John ‘Nogger’ Hawkins. He is also son of Frocester legend Dave ‘Metal’ Whincup. Sharing the same initials as his old man means that the play cricket stats are sometimes slightly inaccurate. But we like to think we have just built a super cricketer! Daniel has cemented his spot in the first XI over the last few seasons. A couple of knee injuries has meant that he hasn’t played as much as he would have wanted. Bit of a jack of trades Dan is a solid top order batsman and a miserly seam bowler. He is also more than handy with the gloves. But I think the keeping days may be on hold until the knee troubles disappear.
Dan’s top score was an impressive 138* against Swindon back in 2015. The year before that returned an impressive 4/1 against Bath.
Another member of the squad who played youth representative cricket and excelled across multiple sports. We will blame the rugby for the dodgy knee!
This episode is all about young all rounder Will Naish.
Will made his senior debut for the club in 2016 at the age of 12 and no one could believe what was to follow. The next season Will scored 103 against Bourton Vale in a second XI fixture. How do you top that? In 2019 scored his maiden first team hundred against Dumbleton. Impressively Naishy got 120 off 113 balls included 12 fours and 5 sixes. Not sure you were doing at the age of 15 but our guess is it’s not scoring first team WEPL hundreds!
Along with youth representative honours he has captained the south and west side at the prestigious ESCA Under 15s Bunbury Cricket Festival. To put it into context a couple of players who played in this festival are Joe Root and Alastair Cook.
It is time for the next edition of ‘Getting to know you’. This one is focused on first team skipper Uzi.
In the seven seasons Uzi has been with us he has scored 5,614 runs with a highest score of 178*. More importantly he has also taken two wickets. Both were in the same 100 run with against Lansdown. Safe to say he got man of the match that day as he also scored 68 which was 9 more than the whole of the opposition total!
Uzi has represented Gloucestershire Second XI as well as Wiltshire in minor counties cricket and also has a couple of first class games under his belt having represented Cardiff MCCU against Somerset and Warwickshire.
